Who sits at the table

A strategy lead and an editor anchor most engagements. Clients bring brand, product, and sometimes legal. We prefer fewer people with authority to sign over larger circles that defer decisions. The long table fits six comfortably; we split larger groups across two sittings rather than overcrowd the room.

We are an independent studio — not a network, marketplace, or software product. Methods are described; results are not promised. Market conditions, product quality, and client decisions outside our room shape outcomes we cannot control.

Visit etiquette

Confirm your appointment by reply mail at least one working day ahead. Arrive within ten minutes of the agreed time — the room runs on a tide table and late arrivals compress the bearings work that follows. Leave phones on silent in the corridor tray; we will not ask you to surrender them, but ringing during a pass breaks concentration for everyone present. Photography of the heading rail is permitted at handover; photography of client materials on the table is not, unless your mooring letter explicitly allows it.

What to expect inside: the east shutter will be half-open if your session is before noon, closed if after two. You will sit at the long table facing the white wall where we draw the five reference marks. There is no projector, no screen, and no printed agenda — the intake notes you sent are the agenda. Tea is self-service from the side tray; we pause once mid-session for refills. Bearings sessions are closed to additional guests once the first pass begins; if a colleague must join, they should arrive before pass one starts or wait in the corridor until the ebb handover at the end.

First-time visitors often ask whether they should prepare remarks. Prepare questions instead. We will ask you to read your own copy aloud, to name the reader who matters most, and to defend one sentence against a counter-example from your archive. Expect to leave with a photographed rail, a typed handover paragraph in your inbox within two hours, and no slide deck. The stair is narrow and tiled; wear shoes you can climb comfortably. The lift reaches level two directly if stairs are difficult — mention this when booking so we meet you at the lift landing rather than the street door. Water is available; lunch is not provided — East Coast Road cafés are a five-minute walk if you need a break between morning and afternoon sittings.

Correspondence after visits summarises agreed heading lines within two working days so memory does not drift before the mooring letter is drafted. Visits are by appointment only — write from the jetty page to confirm a slot in advance please.

Chapel Road entrance

The walk-up

Twelve Chapel Road is a walk-up shophouse with a veranda facing the side street off East Coast Road. The long table sits under the east window; the tide table is pinned where everyone can see it. We have worked here since the studio was established — quietly, without a ground-floor sign. Appointments are by mail. The stair is tiled and narrow; we mention it so visitors arrive prepared.

Katong morning is cooler than midday. We schedule internal reviews early and client calls after ten when the room has settled. This is not ritual for its own sake; it is how the heading work gets the calm it requires.
